According to Canadian Navy custom, the first sailor to depart had to locate his girlfriend and give her a kiss in front of the dock's waiting audience. Master Seaman Francis Legaré, who is also homosexual, was selected to carry on this tradition. To the cheers of the audience, he discovered his partner, whom he hadn't seen in eight months, as he disembarked from the ship, and gave him a passionate kiss. Journalists on the site hailed this episode, which was observed by some 250 seamen, as historic. Considering how reluctant the military is to accept gays in its ranks, the Royal Canadian Navy is demonstrating openness.
