In February, 24-year-old Jounathan Maimon, the son of a prominent Israeli cabinet secretary, viciously beat Maor Vanunu, the well-known proprietor of the New York eateries Zizi and Hummus Kitchen. According to reports, Maimon struck Vanunu over the head with a 1.75-liter glass jug, resulting in various injuries and a brain hemorrhage. Maimon was granted $25,000 bail and permitted to return to Israel in spite of the attempted murder allegations against him. Still impacted by his injuries, Vanunu challenges the judge's ruling, arguing that the Maimon family's powerful ties influenced how the case was handled.
