Irish basketball players lose games because they won't shake hands with Israeli players

The Israeli women's team defeated Ireland 87-55 in the EuroBasket 2025 qualifying match in Riga. Reflecting the political sensitivities, the Irish players made a statement before the game by declining to shake hands with their opponents. Historically and overwhelmingly, Ireland has supported the Palestinians; this is especially true in light of the terrible events of October 7. The game proceeded in spite of boycott appeals, with the Irish team barely escaping elimination.
