Turkey began a violent crackdown on journalists the day after Ekrem Tamoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul, was charged with corruption. Police brutally attacked at least 12 journalists, including Tansel Can, who was hospitalized after being battered by seven cops. Dilara?enkaya sustained a gash on his forehead, while Hakan Akgün suffered a fractured nose. They were all obviously wearing press badges. Nevertheless: violence, rubber bullets, and gas. At the same time, the government sanctioned a number of TV networks and banned more than 700 social media accounts.
