The terrible condition of a motel that housed refugees without electricity or water
Description:
Located in the center of the previously popular tourist destination, the three-star St Nicholas Elegant Residence near Paphos, Cyprus, is connected to a scene of destruction. Over 600 asylum seekers were sheltered at the location, which was later renamed the Ayios Nikolaos apartment complex. Videos show trash everywhere, water-drained ponds, and graffiti-covered walls that were previously yellow. There, the migrants lived without electricity or water. Police started evicting the migrants after demonstrations and conflicts with locals; this was initially mandated in 2020 for concerns of health and safety. Asylum seekers make about 5% of the population of Cyprus, an island that is seen as a Mediterranean migration frontline.
