Description:

This Monday, migrants from Haiti, Cuba, and Honduras attacked an asylum office in Tapachula, a town in the Mexican state of Chiapas, causing a big disturbance. Fed up with bureaucratic hold-ups, the migrants broke down metal barriers to demand legal documentation that would enable them to travel freely, with the ultimate goal of reaching the U.S. southern border. Some were able to access the Mexican Refugee Aid Commission center in spite of the National Guard and local police. Up to 2,000 applications are being received daily by the asylum office at the time of this turmoil. For a basic appointment, many migrants report having to wait weeks. Given that the Mexican Commission predicts a record 150,000 asylum applications this year, this circumstance underscores the mounting strain on the country's asylum system.
