In six Ecuadorian jails, inmates use machetes and firearms to keep guards hostage

On January 8, riots and hostage-taking by convicts in six jails in Ecuador caused a serious security issue. President Daniel Noboa, who has been in power since November, declared a national state of emergency in response to this incident. This action, which was done for the first time while he was in government, is intended to counteract excessive levels of violence and strengthen security.
