Description:

In 2019, a customer attacked Christine Smith, an elderly Kmart employee, resulting in two black eyes and the need for extensive rehabilitation. Since then, in 2023, the government of New South Wales passed a legislation specifically addressing violence against salespeople. Smith notes that hostile consumer conduct continues in spite of this. Images of employees being threatened with knives were released by Bunnings in November. The retail industry saw a 50% spike in violence in 2023.
